Triton College has invested in Smart Boards to facilitate classroom instruction. While there is not one in every classroom, it is likely that you will find yourself with this equipment in at least one of your classrooms. So, it is important to become familiar with the Boards and their use.
This page is intended to provide quick instructions on
- how to get up and running on the Smart Board
- key features of Smart Notebook, the software that gives you an interactive writing area; and
- Apple TV, a means of projecting content from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch to the board.
We will continue to add more information to this page, so please return here often. Additional training on all the features found on this page is available in the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE). Register for upcoming workshops at the CTE Registration System.
The web page is divided into three areas:
- The Basics - Documents and video explaining the features of the physical board.
- Smart Notebook - Videos demonstrating the key features of the Notebook software
- Apple TV - What it is and how to use it.
The Basics
You may already know how to turn the equipment on and off; however, if you're not sure please refer to the following document to find out: Turning the Smart Board On and Off.
The following You Tube video does a pretty good job of explaining the physical board. Please ignore the bit at the end that talks about hooking up your laptop to the board. As the above document shows, each board is equipped with a dedicated computer (PC) as well as a video player.
Smart Notebook
Smart Notebook software is the means of turning your Smart Board from a plain whiteboard into an engaging, interactive tool. It is installed on all the Smart Boards on campus, as well as in the older electronic classrooms and on the portable AV cart computers. This provides you with the opportunity to create lessons that can be used with any projector-based system on campus.
Notebook 11
Notebook 11 is the version of the Smart Notebook software that is currently available on most of the Smart Boards on campus. The following video provides information about the Smart Notebook Version 11 software basics:
The Smart Notebook Toolbar is your access to the various tools and features that are available in Notebook 11. The following video explains the toolbar:
Notebook 14 - New Features
Now that Notebook 11 has been demonstrated, we need to show you Notebook 14 which is available on 13 Smart Boards that were installed before the start of the Spring 2015 term. Notebook 14 contains several new features, and will be soon available on a Smart Board near you...
Smart Math Tools Available in Notebook 14
In addition to the new functionality, Smart Notebook 14 has significantly improved math tools through the new Smart Math Tools powered by Geogebra! Write equations, create interactive graphs, and use new Smart Board features that are available for all levels of math instruction and disciplines that use equations and graphs.
Find lesson plans for the Smart Board and connect with other faculty through the Smart Exchange. This website can be searched by discipline and by grade level.
Apple TV
On the second generation of Smart Boards that Triton has installed, you will find a small black box on the top of the projector. This box is Apple TV, which allows you to use materials and apps on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch and display them real time on the Smart Board. Attend a training session in the CTE to learn how to link your mobile device to the Smart Board through Apple TV!If you have any other questions, please contact Marie-Ange Zicher in the CTE at extension 3260 or through e-mail.
